WHVW is a radio station licensed to Hyde Park, New York with studios in Poughkeepsie, New York, owned by Joseph-Paul (J. P.) Ferraro, known on the air as "Pirate Joe." (The nickname stems from Ferraro's involvement with a pirate radio station in Yonkers, New York in the early 1970s. [link])
The station has an eclectic format which reflects Ferraro's musical vision: old-fashioned blues, jazz, country and Americana. It is one of the few stations in the United States that plays such music. It is also one of only two (along with WTBQ in Warwick, New York) radio stations in the Hudson Valley that is locally owned and operated.
WHVW first went to air on July 4, 1963 as WHPN, then WHVW by the early 1970s. The calls were changed to WWWI in 1979, then back to WHVW in 1982. Originally a daytime-only station, WHVW had expanded to 24 hours by the early 1980s; currently the station broadcasts at 500 watts during the day, but with a much weaker signal (only 57 watts) at night.
