- For the AM radio station, see WKRC (AM).
WKRC-TV broadcasts its analog signal on channel 12, and its digital signal on channel 31. Its transmitter is located in the Mount Auburn area of Cincinnati.
History
The station signed on the air on April 4, 1949 on channel 11 and on October 12, 1952 moved to its current dial position on channel 12. Originally a CBS affiliate, it switched to ABC in 1961.The "KRC" of WKRC stood for its radio counterpart's original owner, Kodell Radio Company.
WKRC-TV was the flagship station of Taft Broadcasting for many years. However, in 1987, it was sold (along with most of Taft's other network affiliates) to Great American Broadcasting (which later became Citicasters). The station was subsequently acquired by Jacor (after most of Citicasters' other television stations were sold to New World Communications and Fox), before being purchased by its current owner, Clear Channel. (The AM sister passed into seperate ownership at this period, becoming WLWA - and later WCKY - before reverting back to WKRC; the FM sister is today CBS Radio-owned "Q102" WKRQ.) Local 12 was ranked by Clear Channel as the number one CBS affilate in the United States as of 2006.
The station switched affiliations with WCPO-TV in June 1996, becoming a CBS affiliate once again. WCPO, which would take the ABC affiliation as part of a corporate affiliation deal its owner E.W. Scripps Company cut back in 1994, had to wait for WKRC's affiliation contract with ABC to expire before switching its network affiliation.
On Tuesday, April 18, 2006, The CW Television Network (which is 50% owned by CBS) announced WKRC as its affiliate for Cincinnati. The new network will air on the station's DT2 subchannel starting in September 2006. WKRC is seeking cable carriage for the new channel and is asking viewers to contact their cable company to get the channel on their respective basic tiers [link].
On April 26, 2006, WKRC announced a partnership with WSTR-TV to produce a 10 p.m. local newscast beginning on August 21, 2006.

WKRC is branded "Local 12," but it is owned by Clear Channel. This branding was inspired by the "Local Mandate," a station standardization branding adopted by Post-Newsweek for its own television stations.References
