WKRG-TV
Encyclopedia : W : WK : WKR : WKRG-TV
WKRG has been the CBS television station in Mobile, Alabama since its inception in 1955. The station was brought to the city when a radio signal tower was erected, putting WKRG-TV as well as WKRG AM and FM radio on the air.
In 2002, the focus of the station switched to weather and news, and the channel's slogan was edited to reflect it: WKRG 5 became WKRG News 5, and it was touted as Mobile's "Weather Authority".
The station debuted a new slogan in July 2004: News 5, Coverage You Can Count On., in conjunction with WKRG's 50th year in broadcasting.
Currently, the evening news desk is helmed by Mel Showers and Rose Ann Haven. Bill Riales, Jennifer Abney and John Nodar handle mornings. The head meteorologist today is Alan Sealls, with Jene' Young, Jere Hough, and John Nodar contributing to weather reports on other newscasts.
WKRG is also available to cable subscribers in Biloxi and Gulfport, Mississippi. Though fellow New Orleans CBS affiliate WWL airs its own two-hour morning newscast instead of the The Early Show and usually tends to preempt CBS network programming for Mardi Gras coverage or political debates, tape-delaying broadcasts until the overnight hours. Viewers in the Mississippi Gulf Coast can often view those shows at their regular times, as well as The Early Show, on WKRG.
