WKWS-FM/96.1 The Wolf is one of two Country music stations serving the Charleston, West Virginia area. The station broadcasts at 96.1 MHz with an ERP of 45,000 watts. The Wolf is ranked 2nd in the Arbitron ratings for the Charleston Metropolitan Statistical Area market. The station is owned by the West Virginia Radio Corporation.
96.1 The Wolf is only 1 of 4 radio stations that bradcast in HD Radio in West Virginia. The other two are sister stations "107.3 Jack FM" and "V-100" also in Charleston. WVRC also broadcasts WVAQ-FM in Morgantown in HD.
The Wolf is Charleston's home of NASCAR racing.
History
[From 58WCHS.com]WBES-FM, sister station of WCHS went on the air September 16, 1969 at 96.1 mhz, 50 kw stereo. Located in the same building, 1111 Virginia St., E. in Charleston, it went on the air with a Beautiful Music format, until it was changed to "Warm 96" in 1988, with call letters changed to WVNS (West Virginia Ninety-Six).
Morgantown based West Virginia Radio Corporation purchased WCHS and WBES-FM in 1991. The WBES call letters switched to WKWS and the station’s format to country music.
96.1 The Wolf was formerly known as Kicks 96.
