WNOL-TV

Encyclopedia : W : WN : WNO : WNOL-TV

WNOL-TV, channel 38, is the WB affiliate for the New Orleans, Louisiana market. It is owned by Tribune Broadcasting, and is a sister station to ABC affiliate WGNO-TV (channel 26).

Along with programming from the WB network, WNOL runs a variety of syndicated shows such as off-network sitcoms, talk shows, cartoons, court shows, reality shows, and some movies.

History

WNOL-TV signed on in January 1984 as a general entertainment independent television station, running a variety of cartoons, sitcoms, older movies, drama shows, and religious programs. Its slogan was, "Don't Stay Home Without Us," an homage to Karl Malden's American Express Card commercials.

In 1985, the station was sold to the TVX Broadcast Group. Along with the other stations in the TVX group, WNOL affiliated with Fox in 1986 (it has been said that when WGNO passed on the Fox affiliation, that TVX used WNOL's affiliation with Fox as leverage to get Fox on its other stations). WNOL was sold to Qwest Broadcasting in 1989, but continued to carry the Fox affiliation and run a general entertainment format.

In 1995, Fox set up a deal for Savvoy to buy several television station in the United States, including WVUE in New Orleans. As a result, the Fox affiliation moved from WNOL to WVUE on January 1, 1996. WNOL, on the other hand, acquired the WB affiliation from WGNO - which in turn picked up ABC from WVUE.

Tribune Broadcasting (which owns a stake in the WB network) began to manage WNOL in 1996 under a local marketing agreement (LMA), and purchased the station outright in 2000 (as part of a merger with Qwest), making WNOL and WGNO sister stations-and in a way WNOL became a WB O&O.

In January 2006, the Kids' WB! afternoon block was replaced by Daytime WB, composed of off-network repeats of ER and 8 Simple Rules. What I Like About You replaced ER on the Daytime WB schedule on June 5, 2006.

On January 24, 2006, the WB and UPN networks announced they would merge. The newly combined network would be called The CW, the letters representing the first initial of its corporate parents CBS (the parent company of UPN) and the Warner Bros. unit of Time Warner. The merger would take effect on-the-air in September 2006, and WNOL will become the CW's New Orleans affiliate. Current UPN station WUPL, owned by the CBS Corporation, will become an affiliate of NewsCorp's My Network TV.

In early April 2006, Larry Delia, Tribune Television New Orleans vice president and general manager, announced that WNOL will broadcast a 30-minute newscast at 9 p.m. beginning May 1. Dubbed "ABC 26 News at 9," it will go against WVUE-TV's one hour newscast and will be anchored by Michael Hill. [link]
