Encyclopedia : W : WN : WNV : WNVT

WNVT is a public television station not affiliated with PBS serving the Washington, DC and northern Virginia area. Its studios are located in Goldvein, Virginia. The station is branded as MHz2 and is one of the two stations that make up MHz Networks.

History

WNVT first signed on February 5, 1972 on channel 53. In 1981, WNVT became the sister station to the new channel 56, which came to be known as WNVC. The station had been a public broadcasting station, not affiliated with PBS, on channel 53 until it shut down its analog signal and became digital-only on channel 30.

The WNVT studios were originally at Northern Virginia Community College. When the station was under construction, the school offered an AA in Broadcast Engineering Technology. Ray Harrison was the CE. Prior to WNVT, channel 53 had a brief experimental transmission from somewhere in downtown D.C.

In 2001, the station began branding itself as MHz2 with WNVC becoming MHz.

Programming

WNVT signs on daily at 8:00 p.m. and signs off at midnight. During that time, it broadcasts German, Spanish, and English programming of varying interests. It previously showed locally produced music programming and programs from MuchUSA.
