WPSD-TV

Encyclopedia : W : WP : WPS : WPSD-TV

WPSD-TV, also known by its slogan News Channel 6, is an NBC affiliate based in Paducah, Kentucky. It is owned by Paxton Media Group, a locally based family-run publishing company that also owns the city's daily newspaper, The Paducah Sun. WPSD debuted on the air on May 28, 1957. The "PSD" stands for Paducah Sun-Democrat, the former name of the Sun. Sam Champion, who is now a popular weatherman at New York City's WABC and an occasional replacement on Good Morning America, got his start at WPSD. At one point, the station's transmitter site was located in an area of nearby Ballard County, Kentucky known as Monkeys Eyebrow, a fact which was noted during WPSD's nightly "sign off" message.

The station is part of the Paducah-Cape Girardeau-Harrisburg TV market and covers far western Kentucky, Southern Illinois, southeastern Missouri and northwestern Tennessee. Its transmitter is located in Kevil, Kentucky, and has an additional translator, W10AH, in Carbondale, Illinois.
