WSTR FM ("Star 94", 94.1 MHz) is an Atlanta FM radio station that plays Top 40 Music. It is owned by Lincoln Financial Media, and has Smyrna, Georgia as its city of license.
From the late 1960s to the early 1970s, the station was WKXI. From the early 1970s until late 1989, this station was top 40 94Q (WQXI-FM). Then, it switched to "Star 94". The station in recent years has begun to play some hip hop songs but remains more pop and rock oriented than most Top 40-style stations. Its core audience: 18 to 49 year old women.
In keeping with this more pop and rock based top 40, Star often edits rap songs out of nationally syndicated programs such as American Top 40 with Ryan Seacrest (they also edited out rap songs during Casey Kasem's reign.) Star has even gone so far as edit out the #1 songs in these broadcasts: for example, in 1994, Star edited "Another Night" by Real McCoy, a dance/rap song, out of Casey's Top 40 when it was airing. As said above, Star has recently added some R&B/Hip-Hop songs to their playlist, but they continue to edits out hardcore rap songs from ever airing.
Several influential air personalities have worked at the Atlanta station, including Ryan Seacrest from American Idol and Scott Shannon from WPLJ in New York. The current staff includes the Steve & Vikki show, one of Atlanta's longest running morning shows. Tripp West does Middays. The afternoon drivetime show is Cindy & Ray, which is like a morning show in its approach. Nudge is the night-time guy.
The station's general manager Mark Kanov has worked at the station since the late 1960s.
WSTR FM shares a tower with WPBA TV 30, and in fact shares the same antenna with WSB-FM 98.5 and WVEE FM 103.3. The three radio stations' transmitters are diplexed together, so that they all feed to the antenna instead of into each other.
Trivia
- WQXI was the inspiration for the television show WKRP in Cincinnati, and the character Johnny Fever was based on WQXI's morning host Skinny Bobby Harper. [link]
