WTAR

Encyclopedia : W : WT : WTA : WTAR

WTAR or Fox Sports 850 is a sports radio station broadcasting in Norfolk, Virginia serving the Hampton Roads radio market. The station is owned by Sinclair Communications (no relation to Sinclair Broadcasting, which happens to own WTVZ in the same market).

History

The 850 frequency was originally WCAV when it signed on in 1952. But during the 1960s and 1970s they were better known as R&B outlet WRAP. They would later be replaced by WNIS, which moved from 1350 in the 1980s. They in turn would later swap signals with the original WTAR in the late 1990s.

The call letters WTAR refers to activities at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard...We Tow And Repair.

It mainly airs Fox Sports Radio programming, and syndicated talkshows The Phil Hendrie Show and John and Jeff. WTAR was formerly known as Talkradio 850 WTAR, but their sister station, WNIS, was also a talkradio station and they were too substantially similar. WTAR was the former Hampton Roads radio home for the Dr. Laura radio show.
