WTAT-TV
Encyclopedia : W : WT : WTA : WTAT-TV
WTAT-TV, Fox 24, is the Fox television affiliate in Charleston, South Carolina. It broadcasts its analog signal on UHF channel 24, and its digital signal on UHF channel 40. It is owned by Cunningham Broadcasting and operated by the Sinclair Broadcast Group under a local marketing agreement; however, due to Cunningham's financial structure, Sinclair effectively owns WTAT as well (see below). Its transmitter is located in Awendaw, South Carolina. It is the sister station to UPN and future My Network TV affiliate WMMP channel 36.
History
The station began operations in 1985 under the ownership of Act III Broadcasting. In 1986, it became a charter affiliate of the new Fox network. Abry Communications bought the Act III group in the early 1990's. Abry merged with Sinclair in 1996, but WTAT was sold to Sullivan Broadcasting, which was managed by Sinclair. In 2001, Sinclair tried to buy both Sullivan and Glencairn, Ltd. outright, but the FCC allowed Sinclair to buy only some of the stations. WTAT wasn't one of them; it was sold to Cunningham Broadcasting (the successor to Glencairn) instead. However, Sinclair effectively owns Cunningham Broadcasting's stations (including WTAT) since Sinclair's owners, the descendents of the company's founder Julian Smith, control more than 90% of Cunningham's stock.
Newscasts
WTAT airs a half-hour newscast called FOX24 News at 10 at 10:00 p.m. It is the oldest and longest running 10 o'clock news broadcast in South Carolina premiering in the early 90's. It is produced by CBS affiliate WCSC-TV, and features WCSC's on-air staff. WTAT's website has an anouncement of changes to the newscast in August 2006.External links
