WTA Tier I Events

The WTA Tier I tournaments are a series of ten tennis tournaments held throughout the year in various locations around the world, chiefly in Europe and North America. The tournaments are part of the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) tour. The concept is similar to the ATP Masters Series.
Events
The locations of the tournaments are somewhat fixed, although recently there have been some changes. The 10 tournaments – in calendar order – are:

The series is followed by the year-end WTA Tour Championships, played only by the eight top players in the year-end singles rankings. The location of this season-ending tournament varies. From 2002 till 05 the location was Los Angeles, California, United States. In 2006 the tournament will be played in Madrid, Spain.

Trivia
- Monica Seles holds the record for the most consecutive wins at a Tier One event. From 1995 to 1999, she reached the finals of the Canadian Open, winning on the first four occasions. No other player (to date) has won a particular Tier One event four times in a row.
- Martina Hingis of Switzerland has won all the different Tier I tournaments except for the San Diego event, which became a Tier I event in 2004, during her three-year withdrawal from the sport which ended in late 2005.
