WTMM

Encyclopedia : W : WT : WTM : WTMM

WTMM, known as ESPN Radio 1300 The Team is an AM radio station broadcasting on 1300 kHz licensed to Rensselaer, New York. The station is owned by Regent Communications and runs a sports radio format.

Programming

Unlike rival station WOFX, WTMM has no locally originated programming, taking all of its talk content from ESPN Radio. However, the station currently airs play-by-play from three teams: In the past, the station has also been home to the Albany River Rats, Albany Firebirds, Albany Conquest (with sister station WABT) and College of Saint Rose athletics.

History

WTMM started out in 1963 as WEEE, a 2500-watt daytime-only radio station. The 1300 khz frequency allocation was created for another station that was forced off the air a year earlier (1280 WRSA Saratoga Springs NY). The station played country music, but always had trouble competing against more powerful & popular WOKO, the leading country music station in the market. In 1972, the station changed hands and adopted the WQBK calls launched by its newly launched FM sister station and the station switched to a talk-radio format. Until the late 1980s, WQBK was the only full-time talk radio station in the Albany area and was an early career stop for Tom Leykis as well as a stop for local figures Paul Vandenburgh (now of WROW) and Tom Mailey (now of WRGB). Around 1988, WQBK's power was increased to 5000 watts and added nighttime service after FCC regulations of daytime stations were relaxed. After the station was sold to Radio Enterprises Inc. in 1995, the station's local programming was cancelled.

In 1997, WQBK switched its calls to WTMM and took on its current sports radio format. For the first year of its new format, WTMM's programming came from One-on-One Sports with the switch of programming to ESPN Radio coming in early 1998.
