WTVC channel 9 is the ABC affiliate in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Owned by Freedom Communications, the station uses the branding NewsChannel 9 for its newscasts. Its transmitter is located in Signal Mountain, Tennessee. Their previous headquarters were located in a former Zayre department store in downtown. They have since moved to a new location at 4279 Benton Drive.

History

The station first signed on the air on March 13, 1953 as WROM-TV in Rome, Georgia; it left the air February 13, 1954. The channel was reallocated to Chattanooga and returned to the air as WTVC on February 11, 1958. The station developed a strong reputation for local programming in its early years. The station currently airs ABC network programming and syndicated fare.

For a long time throughout the 1970s and 1980s, WTVC branded its newscasts Action News.

In 1982, WTVC was sold to Freedom Communications, its present owner.

In 2004, WTVC and WDSI (FOX 61) began a news partnership agreement. First News at 10pm, which can be seen 7 nights a week on FOX 61 is produced by WTVC NewsChannel 9.
