WTVM

Encyclopedia : W : WT : WTV : WTVM

WTVM is the ABC television affiliate in Columbus, Georgia. Its signal covers the Chattahoochee Valley area, including east-central Alabama. It broadcasts its analog signal on VHF channel 9 and its digital signal on UHF channel 47. It's owned by Raycom Media and is sister station to the area's Fox affiliate, WXTX channel 54. WTVM's transmitter is located in Cusseta, Georgia.

It signed on for the first time on September 28, 1953 as WDAK-TV on channel 28. It was a primary NBC affiliate with secondary CBS and ABC affiliations. It was owned by Allen Woodall, Sr., owner of WDAK-AM 540, and Martin Theaters. It lost CBS when WRBL-TV signed on a year later. Woodall sold his interest in the station to Martin Theaters in 1956, and the calls became WTVM. It moved to channel 9 in 1960 in a three-way switch that saw WRBL move from channel 4 to channel 3 and WTVY-TV in Dothan, Alabama move from channel 9 to channel 4. Channel 28 is now occupied by Georgia Public Broadcasting's WJSP-TV.

In 1970, WTVM moved to its current studios on Wynnton Road in Columbus. Shortly afterward, it became a sole ABC affiliate after WYEA-TV (now WLTZ) signed on.
