WTVO

WTVO (Channel 17) is the Rockford, Illinois-based affiliate of ABC. It is the area's oldest television station, started up on May 3, 1953 on Channel 39 (current sister station, Fox affiliate WQRF-TV, currently occupies the Channel 39 frequency in the Rockford market). WTVO moved to Channel 17 in 1967. Its transmitter is located in Rockford.
WTVO was originally affiliated with the NBC television network, but swapped network affiliations with then-ABC station WREX in August 1995. Young Broadcasting of New York purchased the station in the late 1980s. The station was later sold to Mission Broadcasting, a division of Texas-based Nexstar Broadcasting, in November 2004. In addition to now operating WQRF, WTVO also operates Rockford's UPN 16 (WTVO-DT 16.2), which is available only on the area cable systems and WTVO's digital subchannel 16.2.
Rockford UPN 16
Rockford UPN 16 (as it is actually phrased on-air and on its official website) went on the air on September 22, 2003, when the owners of Janesville, Wisconsin-licensed WHPN (Channel 57; now WBUW), Acme Communications (who purchased that station that same year) elected to switch network affiliations from UPN to The WB, leaving the Rockford area without UPN programming, at least temporarily. UPN programming in Madison ended up on WISC-TV's cable/digital-only TV Wisconsin (now UPN14 Madison). WHPN/WBUW served as the UPN station for both Rockford and the near-by Madison, Wisconsin market (Janesville/Rock County, Wisconsin is technically in the Madison market, although the Rockford television stations are significantly viewed there). Because of that move, the Rockford-area cable systems replaced WHPN/WBUW with Chicago's WPWR-TV until UPN 16 signed-on.However, with the merger between UPN and The WB to become The CW, the CW's programming will end up on WBR, The WB's cable-only station that is operated locally by WREX-TV. After that announcement was made Nexstar signed a deal with My Network TV, resulting in UPN 16 becoming an affiliate starting in the Fall of 2006.
