WUKY (91.3 FM) is a public radio station located on the campus of the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky. Originally launched as WBKY in Beattyville, Kentucky, WUKY became Kentucky's first public radio station and the first university-owned FM station in the country. Today, it is an Adult Album Alternative station that airs over 40 hours of music a week, in addition to programming from National Public Radio, Public Radio International, and American Public Media.
History
WBKY began broadcasting its signal March 13, 1941. The 100-watt station operated out of Beattyville, Kentucky. In 1945, the operation moved to Lexington, and increased in size and stature. The station helped create National Public Radio and was one of the first to carry NPR's All Things Considered when it debuted in 1971. In 1989, WBKY changed its call letters to WUKY to better reflect its affiliation with the University of Kentucky.WUKY is supported by its listeners, who give regularly to the station.
Programming
WUKY currently carries programming from NPR, including All Things Considered, Morning Edition, and Fresh Air. In addition to A Prairie Home Companion and other variety shows, WUKY offers diverse locally-produced programs catering to fans of blues, female rock, and classical. The blending of news programming and progressive music is expressed in the station's slogan: "NPR Rocks at 91.3."The station reports to two major trade publications: Album Network and Friday Morning Quarterback.
