WUSF
Encyclopedia : W : WU : WUS : WUSF
WUSF is the callsign of both an National Public Radio-member radio station (WUSF-FM frequency 89.7 FM) and a PBS member television station (WUSF-TV analog channel 16) in Tampa. Both are owned by the University of South Florida. WUSF-FM signed on in 1963, seven years after USF's founding in 1956. WUSF-TV followed in 1966.
In 2003, WUSF-FM became the first radio station in the United States to air all of its programming exclusively in digital format. Since then, the television station has also switched to high-definition programming.
WUSF-TV's main rival for viewers is WEDU, one of the highest-rated public television stations in the country. However, due to its ties with USF, most of WUSF's programming is educational in nature -- especially telecourses, which WUSF shows during the afternoon and late-night hours.
