WVCR-FM

Encyclopedia : W : WV : WVC : WVCR-FM

WVCR-FM (88.3 The Saint) is a Variety hits radio station owned by, and primarily staffed by students from, Siena College. The station broadcasts on 88.3 MHz at a power equal to 2.8 kilowatts ERP from the Heldeberg Mountains tower farm in New Scotland. The station, which flipped from Top 40 on April 9, 2006, holds the distinction of being the only non-commercial to emulate the Variety hits format made popular by the Jack FM approach.

WVCR is a rare breed among college stations, the station's format and appearance is more akin to commercial rivals in the market than other college stations featuring commercial traits ranging from commercial break-style underwriter announcements to weather provided by Fox affiliate WXXA-TV (albeit underwritten). This approach has been the subject of most protest from both on and off the Siena campus, however the station does run a few hours a day of Siena-centric programming including home and some away games for the men and women's basketball teams.

From 6:00 a.m.-9:00 p.m. on Sundays, WVCR breaks its format for a day of block programming known as Saint Sundays; the programming during this period includes gospel music, Irish music, and big bands.

At one time, boasted a 'multi-genre' format offering Alternative and hard rock, urban contemporary, rap, and heavy metal. This format was hugely popular with the local area, and it was during this time that the radio station had collected $25000 in donations to replace its aging transmitter.

After the transmitter was in place, and without the consent, approval, or knowledge of the "Executive Committee" (put in place by Fr Partick Tuttle, OFM), or the current on-air staff, the station format was changed, literally overnight.
