WWE Backlash

Encyclopedia : W : WW : WWE : WWE Backlash

WWE Backlash is an annual World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) event, which started in 1999. As of 2004, Backlash became a RAW exclusive pay-per-view event. Backlash will often feature a rematch from WrestleMania, or a match based on events that took place at WrestleMania. On three occasions (1999, 2004, and 2005), the main event for Backlash was identical to the main event for that year's WrestleMania (with the exception that the 1999 Backlash match featured Shane McMahon as the special referee rather than Mankind). The match results were always identical as well. As of 2006, Triple H is the only wrestler to have competed at every Backlash event, with a win-loss record of 3-5.

Prior to the show, the WWE was warned against the use of blood. WWE asked for allowance of special usage of blood and/or allowance to stop a match in the case of accidental bleeding, the latter of which is in according with the commission's rules, which the commission denied. WWE was fined $3,250 and given a 24-month probationary period by the Boxing and Wrestling Authority.

The violations in question are as follows:

Four superstars suffered injuries at the 2006 edition of Backlash. Triple H received a laceration around his left eye, which required medical attention; Shawn Michaels suffered a partially broken nose; and the Women's Championship match left both Trish Stratus and Mickie James injured, with a dislocated shoulder and left elbow injury respectively.
