WZTK

Encyclopedia : W : WZ : WZT : WZTK

WZTK (101.1 FM) is a News/Talk radio station in Burlington, North Carolina. It serves the Triad and Triangle areas, which includes cities such as Greensboro, Winston-Salem, Raleigh, Durham, and Fayetteville. In addition the signal goes well north of Danville, Virginia. This gives the station the opportunity to broadcast to more people than any other station licensed in the state. The outlet, which is owned by Curtis Media, claims to have the largest FM radio signal in all of North Carolina, operating with an ERP of 100 kW. The reason for that FM radio signal claim comes from Curtis Media, due to the population covered by the station's signal.

History

WZTK signed on in 1948 as WBBB-FM 101.3, sister station of Burlington's WBBB (now WPCM)920 AM. WBBB would later move slightly down the dial to 101.1 FM. Several years after signing on, WBBB-FM became easy listening WNCB before becoming WPCM "Country 101" in 1978. On January 9, 1998, WPCM joined with Goldsboro-based WKTC, assuming the WKIX "Kix" country format previously at 96.1 FM in Raleigh. WKTC became WKIX, while WPCM became WKXU. Both were known as "Kix 96.9 and 101.1". The WPCM calls moved over to 920 AM, whose WBBB calls ended up on Raleigh's 96.1 FM. In 2000, "Kix" positioned itself as "Country Legends Kix" playing more classic country. In February 2001, 96.9 FM dropped the country for a simulcast of new eighties outlet WWMY "Star 102.9". WKXU briefly partnered with a new, smaller WKIX, now at 102.3 FM, before separating a few days later on Valentine's Day. On Tuesday, July 6th, 2004, the WKXU call letters moved to another country station, the former WHLQ in Louisburg, and 101.1 FM became WZTK "FM Talk 101.1". The first live voices heard on the "new" station were those of Brad Krantz and Britt Whitmire, the morning team, which is still in place. WZTK's sister AM station WPCM (920 kilohertz) simulcasted the FM's talk programming until the summer of 2005, when it went back to its previous beach/oldies format.

Programming

Fox News Radio is broadcast on the hour 24/7. Listeners hear a variety of talk covering most of the left-right continuum, as well as financial advice, "guy talk", and local/state issues. WZTK was not the first to try "FM Talk", but it is by far the largest in the Carolinas. No other 100,000 watt FM signal has attempted the format in NC.

FM Talk 101.1 is not a 24 hour news/talk station; in fact, the station offers smooth jazz on the weekends. The station is also an affiliate of the Carolina Panthers Radio Network and carries Wake Forest University football and basketball (beginning in Fall '06).
