Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme
Encyclopedia : W : WA : WAC : Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme
Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme ("Sleepers Awake, the Voice is Calling") is a noted cantata by Johann Sebastian Bach, BWV 140. It is based on the chorale of the same name by Philipp Nicolai. This lutheran hymn remains popular both in its original German and in a variety of English translations, Nicolai's original tune still being used (often in a setting by Bach). The text on which it is based comes from the gospel of Matthew, and in Bach's time was rarely used because it was set for reading on the 27th Sunday after Trinity, a Sunday that only occurs in the church year when Easter is very early. In the modern Revised Common Lectionary, however, it or related texts are set for the first Sunday in Advent, and the hymn, or the cantata, are commonly used in churches on that Sunday. Another setting by J.S. Bach is a chorale prelude for organ (Schübler Chorale No. 1), BWV 645, which has been recorded with cello by Yo-Yo Ma.
