Wakarusa Music and Camping Festival is a weekend music festival held annually in early June just outside Lawrence, Kansas since 2004. It features a variety of jam bands vendors of items related to the alternative music scene. In 2004, 7500 paid attendees came but the festival suffered from severe scalping. In 2005, the daily attendance records showed 50,000 entries, although each day was capped at 15,000 due to an agreement with Clinton State Park [link]. The 2006 artist lineup included Les Claypool (of Primus fame), The Flaming Lips, Gov't Mule, Robert Randolph and the Family Band, The Greyboy Allstars, Sound Tribe Sector 9, Yonder Mountain String Band, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, The Disco Biscuits, Keller Williams, Michael Franti and Spearhead, The Reverend Horton Heat, Buckethead, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Railroad Earth, Benevento-Russo Duo, Animal Liberation Orchestra, Perpetual Groove, Tim Reynolds, Cracker, New Monsoon, Tea Leaf Green, The Cat Empire, Hot Buttered Rum, Hurra Torpedo, Todd Snider, Lucero, Will Hoge, Donna the Buffalo, Gabby La La, Jake Shimabukuro, Bob Schneider, Shooter Jennings, Camper Van Beethoven, Andrew Bird, Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band, Jackie Greene, Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers, Hackensaw Boys, The Avett Brothers, Virginia Coalition, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Rocky Votolato, and others.In addition, the 2006 festival made available a low-power broadcasting radio station called Waka-radio, by pairing up with University of Kansas radio station KJHK.
2005
In 2005, the festival was marred by the discovery of a deceased individual on site; later determined to be William J. Pospisil, 29, of Key Largo, Florida [link]. A coroner's report determined that Pospisil died of a drug overdose [link].External links
