The Wakarusa Music Festival in Lawrence, Kansas, began in 2004 in Lake Clinton State Park and is held there annually. It hosts music of the jam band genre, notably rock, jazz, funk, bluegrass, electronica and folk music. Other activities include disc golf, yoga, hiking, swimming in Clinton Lake along with many other attractions.
The 2006 festival marked a new ground in police security at the state park. On Wednesday and Thursday, the exit which many took to get to the festival from the highway became a police roadblock, using drug dogs and searches at their discretion, often without probable cause. Police patrolled the camping grounds as well as the concert venue, arresting many. Police in nightvision goggles topped the treelines as well. Besides the new security presence, the festival ran extremely well with temperatures topping the mid-90s.
