Walter William (Wally) Herger (born May 20 1945), American politician, has been a Republican member of the United States House of Representatives since 1987, representing the 2nd District of California, including Chico, Redding and Red Bluff. He was born in Yuba City, California, attended California State University, Sacramento.
He grew up on his family’s 200-acre cattle ranch and plum farm in the northern Californian town of Rio Oso. He also worked in the family’s oil and gas business. Prior to his election to the House, Herger was a member of the California State Assembly (1980-1986). Herger is married to his second wife Pamela Sargent and has eight children. He is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and sits on the United States House Committee on Ways and Means, where he chairs the Subcommittee on Human Resources.
Although he is the fourth ranking member on the Ways and Means committee, Herger is not expected to enter the race to succeed chairman Bill Thomas when Thomas steps down in January 2007.
Herger will face Democrat Arjinderpal Sekhon in the November 2006 general election, in a rematch. Herger defeated Sekhon in the 2002 general election. Sekhon won a contested June Democratic primary, defeating Bill Falzett in what some considered an upset.
