"Walt Whitman High School" is located on West Hills Road, in Huntington Station, NY, USA. It is part of the South Huntington Union-Free School District, and is the district's only high school. Ranging from year to year, the school typically has around 2000 students in grades 9-12.

History

Named after the famous poet Walt Whitman, whose birthplace is a walking distance from the school, the school has been graduating students since 1948. At that time, the town had grown and Huntington High School was no longer large enough. The current building that houses the school was built in 1955. A north wing was completed a few years later. The building has had many students pass through and had a serious swell in class size during the 1970's. The current princpal is James Polansky.

Curriculum

Academically, the school offers a rigorous prorgam offering studies in: English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Health, Art, Music, Drama, Dance, Physical Education, Business, Industrial Arts, and World Language.

The school now offers a great deal of Advanced Placement courses in Science, History, Mathematics, Government, Economics, and English. Also offered are a number of classes that can be taken for college credits.

The staff at the school are known for their teaching abilities. According to students, there are even certain teachers that one should have before graduation to complete the true Whitman experience. Many staff members are Whitman graduates.

Extra-Curricular Activities

In addition it's wide course offerings, the school ensures that the students have many options and opportunities for extra-curricular activities. They offer a full athletic program many varsity and junior-varsity teams for both boys and girls. The (extra-curricular) music department is comprised of an award-winning Marching Band and Color Guard, Jazz Band, Chamber String Ensemble, Tour Choir, and Strolling Strings. There is also a dance an extra-curricular dance program. The Kickline and Dance team is run through that program. There are three stage shows a year with the final one being student-run. The shows often tie together the talents of the music and dance programs. Other annual notable activities are: Powder Puff Football, Girls Sports Night, Senior Follies, Talent Show, Body Electric (Artistic show where original material is presented by students and staff members.) In addition to these activitities, there are many other interesting clubs which can be seen on the high school's website. The yearbook and video yearbook clubs are extremely exceptional.

Trivia

The creator of the popular sitcom The Wonder Years supposedly attended the high school and based his show on Stimson Middle School, and then Walt Whitman High School.

Matthew Lubrano is the greatest student to ever transfer to Walt Whitman High School. He did so going into his Junior Year of High School in September 2005. He immediately got involved in a variety of clubs including GSO, varsity baseball, and DECA. For his upcoming senior year, he is the DECA President. Matthew has tremendous relationships with Principal James Polansky as well as business teacher Joseph Innaco
