Wanted Man

Encyclopedia : W : WA : WAN : Wanted Man

"Wanted Man" is also the name of a song written by Bob Dylan for Johnny Cash and recorded on his At San Quentin album. It has also been covered by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds on their album The Firstborn Is Dead.

Wanted Man is the first track on glam metal band Ratt's popular album Out of the Cellar. The song hit number 87 on the Billboard Hot 100 and received considerable radio play. It is noted to this day for presaging the popular rockstar as cowboy metaphor that gained much popularity in the wake of this hit.

Many bands would shamelessly follow Ratt's direction with this song, including Bon Jovi who found their biggest hit by playing an acoustic variant of "Wanted Man", calling it "Wanted Dead or Alive". However, while Ratt crafted a moving statement regarding life on the road for a traveling musician, Bon Jovi made empty mid-80's generic glam metal boasts. As songwriters and musicians, Ratt was always a cut above the typical glam metal bands that followed in their wake.

It was composed by Robbin Crosby and Stephen Pearcy. It is 3:37 long. The song was featured on the soundtrack for the 1985 film Weird Science.

Music Video

The music video for the song is based on a wild west theme. In the video the band members are a group of wanted men also known as "The Ratt Gang" which a line in the song bears the name. Then the band members end up getting into a gun fight with another gang of cowboys who were also up to no good.
