War Rock

Encyclopedia : W : WA : WAR : War Rock

WarRock (Korean:워록) is a game influenced by Battlefield 2 (WarRock was however initially released before Battlefield 2 in 2004). It was designed by Dream Execution and is being published by Nexon of South Korea and K2 Network of the USA. Dreamexecution published a beta for the game during 12/09/05 - 2/28/06 but recently sold the USA and International rights to K2 Network. the USA and International version of the game pre-released on May 22, 2006 and the closed beta released June 14, 2006. The game now is in open beta released on July 14, 2006.

Information

Warrock features several maps, several vehicles and aircrafts, and over 25 different weapons. The player has the choice of playing on the NIU team or the Derbaran team. The player has the choice of a number of classes, with each class having a different weapon set, and ostensibly different role and tactics. The game also features a ranking system. They also have an in-game Item Shop where the player can 'purchase' more powerful weapons using e-dinar you earn by playing the game. Some weapons can only be bought if the player uses real money to pay for a 5th weapons slot. The player can also use real money to pay for other benefits in the game in the future as well.

Security

In order to combat growing levels of cheating in the international version, the game now uses the Punkbuster. The Korean version uses GuardCAT. So far people have been able to make bypasses for GuardCAT effortlessly, yet there has been no proof of a hacker in the International version since the release of Punkbuster in the game. However, it can be difficult to tell a hacker from a legitimate player. Developers and players with special accounts have access to extra weapons and items, and WarRock contains many bugs, glitches, and exploits, the abuse of which is definitely cheating, but not necessarily hacking. A check of the official forums at any time reveals dozens and dozens of reported hackers, but it can

Compatibility

Unfortunately, Warrock suffers from severe compatibility issues. Most integrated graphics cards (especially Intel), if they are able to run Warrock at all, suffer from extreme darkness and/or other various issues. It is possible to raise Gamma to absurd levels to combat the darkness, but it's not an ideal solution. Low end graphics cards are known to cause buildings and vehicles to disappear completely if higher graphics settings are enabled. Reports of high latency and frequent disconnects are also quite common, and are often caused by improper router, proxy server, and firewall settings.

Unforunately, tech support is rather lacking. Unless you have a problem specifically covered by a sticky on the official forums, it is unlikely you will recieve any help at all.

Classes

WarRock players can pick from five basic classes:

Vehicles

Note: Vehicles are not found in mission maps, and the Harbor map.

Modes

Warrock has a variety of different modes and will be adding more in the near future.

Mission Mode

Mission mode is a mode in Warrock where you have one life and you must complete an objective to win the match. So far the only gamemode in this mode is explosive. You ethier destroy all of your enemies to win or if you are on the Debaran team you can plant a bomb at a bombsite and make sure it goes off and you win. If you are on the NIU team you have to defuse the bomb in order to win if a bomb has been planted. This mode is very similar to the game Counter-Strike. Also heavy weapons units are very bad when it comes to performance here because of the size and nothing to use your heavy weapons on.

Infantry Combat

These maps can range from small to large size maps. The object is to reduce your opponents counter to zero. Most of these maps have little to no vehicles in them and are designed for small arms combat.

Vehicle

Vehicle combat maps are usually large maps with many vehicles. Although you may fight on foot it is not advised as distance between camps can be quite far. Game ends when your opponents counter reaches zero.

Maps

The number of maps grow as they release more. There are currently 8 maps in total.

Reception

The game is a class-based, vehicular first-person shooter in the vein of the Electronic Arts Battlefield franchise. WarRock is most often compared to Battlefield 2 and Counter-Strike because of its ranking system as well as the developers' intent to add the ability to purchase weapon upgrades, using in-game cash earned while playing, in the next patch.
