Wasatch Academy

Encyclopedia : W : WA : WAS : Wasatch Academy

A private, co-ed boarding school, Grades 9 through 12, in Mt. Pleasant, Utah, two hours south of Salt Lake City. Founded in 1875 by Presbyterian minister Duncan McMillan, the School was named after the Wasatch Mountains rising from the valley floor just east of campus.

The School offers a conventional college prep curriculum to its very unconventional student body, totaling 140, from throughout the country and around the world. Wasatch is as diverse as any school of its size in the country. Students whose quirks and idiocyncracies are scorned elsewhere find them welcomed and nurtured here. This results in many distinctive, self-confident individuals in each graduating class, ready to change the world, not just conform to it. They have achieved success in a wide variety of fields.

The rugged beauty of the Sanpete Valley also attracts a stimulating and eclectic faculty, most of whom live within a couple of blocks of the School's classic quadrangle, making them available to their students throughout the week. The School is especially well-situated for those eager to embrace outdoor adventure, whether on mountain bikes, weekend trips to Zion and Bryce Canyon or testing their skill at the School's own snowboard park, in nearby Fairview Canyon.
