Washburn University is a four-year college in Topeka, Kansas. Washburn University also operates a law school.
Washburn University was established in February 1865 as Lincoln College by a charter issued by the State of Kansas and the General Association of Congregational Ministers and Churches of Kansas on land donated by abolitionist John Ritchie. The school was renamed Washburn College in 1868 after receiving a $25,000 donation by Ichabod Washburn, a church deacon and resident of Worcester, Massachusetts.
The Washburn family coat of arms is also the school's coat of arms.
On 26 March2005 the Washburn Lady Blues won the NCAA division II national basketball championship, defeating Seattle Pacific University 70-53. The 2004-2005 team set the school record for wins, going 35-2 on the year.
Through the College of Arts and Sciences and Schools of Applied Studies, Business, Law and Nursing, the University's 7,350 students have access to over 190 programs of study.
Washburn is the last municipally chartered university in the country. Primary funding for the University is from a county-wide sales tax. Washburn operates public television station KTWU-TV, Channel 11.
Other campus supported media include the campus newspaper The Review[link] student newsaper and WUCT Cable Television Channel 13.
Washburn sponsors English language programs in England, Denmark, Sweden, China, Japan, Belgium, Austria, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Spain.

Davey Lopes - Former manager of the Milwaukee Brewers baseball team. He had a 16-year baseball career with Los Angeles, Oakland, Houston and the Chicago Cubs. He spent 11 seasons as a coach with Texas, Baltimore and San Diego.
Billie Jean Moore - 1999 inductee to the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame. She is the former head women's basketball coach at UCLA and 1976 Olympic women's basketball coach.
Patrick Schartz - 1997 Graduate in Mass Communications with an emphasis in Broadcast Journalism. He went on to have a moderately successful career working in motorsports before becoming a national speaker to the financial and insurance industry. He currently resides in sunny Tampa, Florida and travels throughout the country speaking to thousands. He is still as sexy as ever!
