Waterbury Republican-American

Encyclopedia : W : WA : WAT : Waterbury Republican-American

The Republican American, headquartered in Waterbury, Connecticut is America's 183rd largest newspaper (as of September, 2005) with an average Sunday circulation of 62,503.[link]

The name is the result of the merging of two newspapers, The American and the Republican (See also Austin American-Statesman, a newspaper owned by Cox Enterprises whose name arose from a similar merger), which merged in the early 1990s. There was also a third paper owned by the publisher, The Democrat, which folded in 1946. The newspaper was founded and is still controlled by the Pape family through a holding company, American Republican Inc., with William J. Pape, II serving as current publisher. The Executive Editor is Jonathon Kellogg.

The newspaper is made up of more than 40 reporters covering Greater Waterbury, the Naugatuck_River_Valley, Pomperaug and the Litchfield area. More than 50 towns are included in the newspaper's coverage area. The Paper is known for a hard-right editorial page that frequently rails against liberals, Democrats and perceived-Communists(c.f. [http://www.rep-am.com/story.php?id=7224).

The Republican American was distinguished in 1939 with a Pulitzer Prize for Community Service, which can be seen by anyone during office hours. The paper is located at 389 Meadow St. in Waterbury.
