Watkinsville is a town in Oconee County, Georgia, United States. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,097. The city is the county seat of Oconee County[Geographic references#6GR6], and was formerly the seat of Clarke County until it was divided in 1875. That county's business moved to its new seat of Athens at that time.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 8.4 km² (3.2 mi²). 8.3 km² (3.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.31% is water.
Demographics
As of the census[Geographic references#2GR2] of 2000, there were 2,097 people, 827 households, and 578 families residing in the town. The population density was 251.4/km² (650.6/mi²). There were 862 housing units at an average density of 103.4/km² (267.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 89.08% White, 7.34% African American, 0.05% Native American, 1.62% Asian, 0.48% Pacific Islander, 0.86% from other races, and 0.57% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.96% of the population.There were 827 households out of which 36.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.6% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.1% were non-families. 24.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 2.99.
In the town the population was spread out with 26.8% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 33.0% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 8.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 92.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.5 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $45,729, and the median income for a family was $55,170. Males had a median income of $32,295 versus $26,168 for females. The per capita income for the town was $20,968. About 3.8% of families and 5.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.9% of those under age 18 and 4.7% of those age 65 or over.
Trivia
Researchers for the University of Georgia discovered plasmodesmata in Waktinskville. The still-standing Eagle Tavern was responsible for the University of Georgia being located 10 miles down the road in Athens, over 220 years ago. Watkinsville celebrates its 200th birthday in 2006.External links
