Waverley is a small village in Nova Scotia, Canada. It is located about 20 minutes from Halifax, Nova Scotia. It has a rich history in gold mining. There is an excellent local museum.
Waverley was first settled by Charles Pillsbury Allen, who established a mill in the area. Waverley was named after the Waverly novels by Sir Walter Scott; the change in spelling has never been explained. Allen's original land grant included about 700 acres of land. The remains of his original house still exist on Rocky Lake Drive, in a private residence near where Lakes Thomas and WIlliam meet.
Allen's son-in-law, Cornelius Blois, is credited with discovering gold in Waverley. Two major gold mining periods ensued, from 1866 through the early 20th century. A third attempt to restart the industry occurred in the 1930s, but it proved unprofitable and lasted only a few years. It is also interesting to note that the Shubenacadie Canal system runs through Waverley, between lake William and lake Thomas.
Other industries in Waverley have included millwork and forestry.
Modern-day Waverley is mostly a bedroom community. Major landmarks include two elementary schools; a post office; and a small museum, housed in the old Anglican church. The major intersection between Cobequid Road and Portobello Road has long been home to Waverley Video, run by a kind gentleman named Sammy. There are a number of gravel pits in the area, as well as a firefighter training school. Many street names in Waverley reflect families that have been long established in the area. There is also a canoe and kayak club in Waverley which has produced many world-class athletes, as well as an unofficial record for fastest war canoe.
Each Labour Day weekend, Waverley holds a celebration at the Village Green known as 'Gold Rush Days', to commemorate its gold-mining history. Highlights include karaoke, an arts and crafts show, fireworks, and the Miss Waverley Gold Rush contest.
Rock star Myles Goodwyn, of April Wine renown, hails from Waverley.
