Wayne Taylor is a sports racer and winner of the 1996 and 2005 Daytona 24 hour Sports Endurance race and was born in Port Elizabeth, South Africa on 10 July 1956.
He went to Selborne College in East London, but was expelled before finishing his education. It was at this time he took up go-kart racing. Taylor went on to race in the South African Formula 2 Championship, but like all the competitors was unable to beat the reigning champion, Ian Scheckter. With Formula 2 in its last season, Taylor won the championship in 1986 driving a state of the art, Ralt RT4. He was pushed all the way by former South African champion, Bernard Tilanus driving a 9 year old March 77B.
This championship win opened the door to international racing and Taylor began racing in Europe and The United States, finally winning the IMSA (International Motor Sports Association) championship in 1994, and 1996 in its guise as the World Sportscar Championship (although it was based in North America). At the same time he had his South African citizenship revoked by the new democratic government of South Africa.
In February 2006, Taylor competed in his first Crown Royal International Race of Champions (IROC) race and placed sixth. Two months later, his No. 10 SunTrust Pontiac Riley, co-driven by Max Angelelli and Jan Magnussen, finished eighth in the Crown Royal Grand American Challenge of Long Beach.
Taylor currently resides in Altamonte Springs, Florida with his wife Shelley and sons Ricky and Jordan.
