Encyclopedia : W : WE : WEC : We Can Build You

We Can Build You (ISBN 067975296X) is a 1972 science fiction novel by Philip K. Dick.

Plot

The main character and narrator of We Can Build You is Louis Rosen, a small businessman in a near, alternate future whose partner wants to begin production of simulacra, or androids, based on famous Civil War figures. Two prototypes, one of Edwin M. Stanton and one of Abraham Lincoln, are completed. The story revolves around the attempts of Rosen's company to sell the patents on the robots to Sam K. Barrows, an influential businessman.

As in many Dick novels, We Can Build You addresses the questions, "What is human?" and "What is normal?" The Stanton and Lincoln robots are portrayed as much more dynamic and caring than the actual humans who argue over them. In addition, the future Dick portrays is one in which schizophrenia and alienation from one's emotions have become endemic, and a government Federal Bureau of Mental Health has become increasingly powerful and important.

Rosen's love-interest is the daughter of his business partner, a borderline schizophrenic young woman named Pris.
