Welch Foods Inc. (Welch's) is an American company that has produced fruit juices, soft drinks, jams, fruit snacks, and jellies since 1869. It is the food processing and marketing arm of The National Grape Cooperative Association, which comprises 1,400 grape growers located in Michigan, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Washington, and Ontario.
Welch's is particularly known for its grape juices and jellies, made from dark Concord grapes and white Niagara grapes.
In May of 2006, Welch's adopted a [scientific research policy] against animal testing, at the request of PETA. Before adopting this policy, Welch's had funded experiments on animals in order to test the health benefits of grape juice, some of which included cutting open dogs chests and inducing massive blood clots, forcing monkeys to inhale second hand smoke, and inducing hundreds of rats with breast cancer and then slicing them open to observe the size and number of tumors after drinking grape juice. Juice companies Ocean Spray and Tahitian Noni followed their lead soon after, adopting similar policies.
