West Oakland is a large neighborhood in Oakland, California. Although West Oakland is situated in the north of Oakland, it is not to be confused with North Oakland, a different section of Oakland located further to the northeast. Having existed since the late 1800s, West Oakland is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Oakland. Since the mid-1900s, African Americans had been West Oakland's primary residents. West Oakland today also has a small Latino and Cambodian population.

McClymonds Senior High School is located in West Oakland as well as the West Oakland BART station. The bulk of the Port of Oakland's container terminals are located along the West Oakland waterfront, as well as the district USPS office.

West Oakland is the site of a number of urban revitalization projects, including the Mandela Parkway, a park built along the Cypress Freeway brought down by the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, and the Mandela Transit Village, a mixed retail and residential development built at the end of Mandela surrounding the West Oakland BART station. Successful developments in Downtown Oakland, on one side, and Emeryville, on the other, have lead to pressure for redeveloping previously industrial areas of West Oakland into residential apartments and condominiums. Many current residents and business owners in the area, however, are against these plans as they feel it is a sign of encroaching gentrification in the area.
