Westbrook is a city in Cumberland County, Maine, United States. The population was 16,142 at the 2000 census. Primarily a suburb of the larger city of Portland, ME, Westbrook itself has its own growing core downtown area and business base. Several notable companies call Westbrook home, including IDEXX Laboratories, Inc., Olympia Sporting Goods, Disability RMS (the disability reinsurance division of Assurant Employee Benefits, Inc.), and Sappi Ltd.'s Westbrook Paper Mill and R&D Center.

Geography

Westbrook is located at [43°41′7″N, 70°21′26″W] (43.685348, -70.357116)[Geographic references#1GR1].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 44.2 km² (17.1 mi²). 43.7 km² (16.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it (1.17%) is water.

Demographics

As of the census[Geographic references#2GR2] of 2000, there were 16,142 people, 6,863 households, and 4,261 families residing in the city. The population density was 369.4/km² (956.9/mi²). There were 7,089 housing units at an average density of 162.2/km² (420.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 96.69% White, 0.88% African American, 0.27% Native American, 0.82% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.28% from other races, and 1.03% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.89% of the population.

There were 6,863 households out of which 29.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.3% were married couples living together, 12.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.9% were non-families. 30.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 2.90.

In the city the population was spread out with 23.4% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 31.0% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 89.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $37,873, and the median income for a family was $47,120. Males had a median income of $32,412 versus $25,769 for females. The per capita income for the city was $19,501. About 6.7% of families and 8.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 13.7% of those under age 18 and 5.7% of those age 65 or over.
