Wetwang

Encyclopedia : W : WE : WET : Wetwang

This is about the East Yorkshire village. For the location in Lord of the Rings see Nindalf.
Wetwang is the name of a village in the Yorkshire Wolds in England. It is known for Iron Age chariot burial cemetery and its black swans.

It is recorded in the Domesday Book as Wetuuangha. This probably comes from the Old Norse vaett-vangr, 'field for the trial of a legal action'.

Its name often attracts mirth, even coming from the late Richard Whiteley of the Channel 4 quiz show Countdown. Whiteley held the honorary title Mayor of Wetwang until his death in 2005. On 25th June 2006, local weather forecaster Paul Hudson from BBC Look North (East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire edition) was invested as Whiteley's successor to the position.
