Expanded overview
Buffy and Kendra go to Giles for help. They find that Kendra is the slayer 'called' when Buffy temporarily died. They reluctantly work together and Buffy soon discovers that Kendra locked Angel up in a cage so that he would dust when the sun rised. They arrive but only to find an empty cage. Willie, the bar guy saves Angel from near death only to dump him in a sewer with Spike. Spike takes Angel back to his place where Angel will be used as a sacrifice to save Drusilla. Back at the warehouse, Spike hands Angel over to Drusilla who plans to torture him. Meanwhile, Buffy realises that there are two slayers, and considers quitting and letting Kendra take over.
Giles begins to bond with Kendra since Kendra seems more dedicated to the job than Buffy. Xander and Cordelia face even bigger problems when they find that this make-up sales man that Cordy let into the house is really a guy made of mealworms. They run and hide in the basement. After a while of waiting, a fight breaks out between the two that ends in a romantic embrace and a kiss. After realizing that they kissed, Xander and Cordelia rush to get out of the basement. At school, Willow and Oz talk about their similar interests. Buffy feels sentenced to be a police officer for her career and goes to a seminar about it.
The policewoman calls Buffy's name, but then pulls out a gun to shoot the Slayer. Buffy misses the bullet and Oz gets shot instead as he tries to block Willow from getting hurt. Kendra then comes to Buffy's rescue. Then everyone gathers in the library, and Giles announces that Angel will die in the ritual to save Drusilla unless he can be saved. Buffy angrily announces that Spike can do anything to her, but when he messes with her boyfriend, he's gone too far. Meanwhile her boyfriend is getting tortured by Dru. She pours holy water on him as she talks about how he killed her whole family. She hopes to make him feel guilty.
Spike comes in and is ready to take Angel. Angel starts talking about what Dru likes and makes Spike angry. He hopes Spike will kill him without saving Dru, the plan almost works when Angel talks about how close him and Dru were and Dru tells him to shut-up. Meanwhile Buffy and Kendra chat about slaying and Buffy proves to her that slaying really is who she is. Later, the Slayers go after Willie to find out what happened to Angel. Buffy gets Willie to take her to Spike and Angel. She sees Angel about to be sacrificed and goes after Spike to save Angel. Kendra shows up to help along with the rest of the Scooby Gang. Xander and Cordelia work together to kill bug guy and they do by gluing him, in his little bug form to the floor.
They Scoobies must fight; Willow stakes a vampire leaving dust on Giles whom was holding the vamp. Buffy and Kendra work to kill the vampires. Spike starts a fire then runs away with his girl hoping that it will be enough to save Drusilla. Buffy chucks something at Spike's head, throwing Spike and Dru into a large organ, crushing them. It seems the Scoobies have won. However after Kendra has left town, Drusilla rises from the rubble, completely revived, and as strong as ever, she carries Spike out of the mess.
Writing and acting
- This episode seems to make a statement on book- versus social learning, the contrast made more distinct by the season finale.
- Bianca Lawson commented on her accent during her stint on Buffy in an interview with SFX magazine:
- ::“I really hated that accent! I got the part, and I didn’t originally have an accent. Then, literally the night before, they said, “What about a Jamaican accent?” So it’s one of those things where, y’know, I just had to put it on tape, but I didn’t have a chance to get comfortable with it. And the thing is, certain things - if you say it properly [in Jamaican patois], people don’t really fully understand it, so they would change things. They’d say, “Well, say it like this” and it’s like, “Would that be accurate in that accent though?” “It doesn’t matter because no-one’s going to understand you!” So different people were giving their interpretations of it. I was like “But everyone’s going to think that I’m doing it wrong!” So personally, I wasn’t happy with the accent!”
- Seth Green mentioned in an Ultimate TV talk that the line “I mock you with my monkey pants” was initially dreamt by Alyson Hannigan. Joss Whedon decided to insert it in the episode. Marti Noxon said in her commentary for the season four DVD, that all the lines after Oz’s compliment about Willow’s smile were ad-libbed by Seth and Alyson.
Production details
Music
- The Beatles - "I Am The Walrus". Xander says, “I am the bug man, coo coo ka choo.” This is a reference to The Beatles’ song “I Am The Walrus” (1967) which contains the line, “I am the eggman, they are the eggmen, I am the walrus, goo goo g’joob.”
Cultural References
- Funny Farm - Buffy tells Kendra not to watch the in-flight movie if it’s got Chevy Chase in it. Sarah Michelle Gellar’s in 1988 had an uncredited cameo in the Chase film, Funny Farm.
- Mary Kay - Xander says, “Okay, Mary Kay, time to…”. Xander is referencing "Mary Kay Cosmetics" since the Bugman had been posing as a salesman from a cosmetics company.
- Mighty Morphin Power Rangers - Buffy says to Kendra “Back off, Pink Ranger!” This is likely an in-joke since Sarah Michelle Gellar’s stunt double, Sophia Crawford, used to be the stunt double for the Pink Power Ranger on the TV show, Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers.
- Molly Ringwald - Buffy said “After all of this is over, I’m thinking pineapple pizza and teen video movie fest. Possibly something from the Ringwald oeuvre.” She is referring to the actress, Molly Ringwald. Ringwald starred in many 80s teen movies like Pretty in Pink and The Breakfast Club. After Alyson Hannigan left the stage production of When Harry Met Sally in 2004, Molly took over the part of 'Sally'.
- Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm - Spike calls Buffy “Rebecca of Sunnyhell Farm”, referencing a 1903 children’s book Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm about a farm girl called Rebecca.
- The Wizard of Oz - Xander says, “Welcome my little pretties”. This is likely a reference to The Wizard of Oz; the Wicked Witch of the West calls Dorothy her “pretty”.
Quotes and trivia
- Drusilla sings the rhyme, “Run and catch, run and catch, the lamb is caught in the blackberry patch” in the episodes "Lie to Me" and "What’s My Line? II" and the Angel episode "Reunion".
- Oz says that all he wants out of life is to play an E flat diminished ninth chord.
- This episode includes the first time Giles dusts a vampire onscreen, and the first time Willow ever dusts a vamp.
