Song Information
Released in February 1986, the single peaked at #4 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart and #1 on its R&B singles chart; it also reached #3 in the UK. The song is notable as the breakthrough single for Jackson; it was her first big hit after several years of releasing duds, and helped her to establish an artistic identity separate from that of her brother, Michael Jackson. The song was written by Jackson and Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis and produced by Jam & Lewis. Jackson helped with the lyrics of the song and was credited as a "co-producer" on the song (but she is not given official credit as a producer). The song talks of a relationship gone bad because the man isn't doing enough to please Janet, prompting her to ask the title question. The song was certified gold in the USA and platinum in the UK and also topped the charts in Holland. It earned a Grammy nomination for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance in 1987. The song, in particular its title, is referenced in Eddie Murphy Raw (1987), as a common question that women ask their partners prior to breaking up.Music Video
"What Have You Done for Me Lately" won aSoul Train Award for Best Music Video. The video's choreographer was Paula Abdul, who appears in the video as Jackson's friend.Charts
