Single release
In Europe and the UK, "When I Grow Up" was issued as a single in January 1999, and became Garbage's fifth UK Top 10 single, hitting the #9 spot.
The song was released to US radio in July 1999, and Australia did not see a single release for the song until August 1999.
Due to the success of the band's "The World Is Not Enough" soundtrack single, the European countries that had previously received "The Trick Is to Keep Breathing" as a single release, were treated to a single release for "When I Grow Up" in February 2000.
Music video
Two videos were shot for "When I Grow Up", both helmed by Sophie Muller for Oil Factory.
The first was recorded live in Indianapolis, Indiana; Madison, Wisconsin; Kansas City and St. Louis, Missouri in November 1998 and was broadcast in the UK and Europe.
The second was filmed in May 1999 and was a studio filmed performance clip, and incorporated footage from the movie 'Big Daddy'. It was broadcast in the US and Australia to accompany the release of that movie. An edit of the video without movie footage was also released.
The second video can be found in the extras on the Region 1 and Region 2 "Big Daddy" DVD.
Remixes
"When I Grow Up" dance remixes were completed for the band by New York DJ Danny Tenaglia.
Some Pop remixes were recorded by the band for US radio. These mixes are more electronic than the LP version and features a change of lyrics - "Happy hours, golden showers" is replaced with "Happy lovers, ache for hours" and "Unprotected, god, I'm pregnant, damn the consequences" is replaced with "Unexpected, unprotected, fear the consequences".
