Whenever You Call
Encyclopedia : W : WH : WHE : Whenever You Call
"Whenever You Call" is a song written and produced by American singer Mariah Carey and Walter Afanasieff for Carey's seventh album, Butterfly. The protagonist of this ballad discusses how she didn't want to fall in love but did, and that if her lover should ever need anything, she will be there for him "whenever he calls". It was released in the United States as the album's sixth and final single in late 1998 (see 1998 in music).
Because Sony had requested that Carey participate in the release of a greatest hits collection, "Whenever You Call" was issued only as a promotional single. Carey re-recorded the song as a duet with Brian McKnight for the hits collection #1's, but it was not given heavy promotion as a single. Its video, directed by Diane Martel, is based on the solo version of the song from Butterfly. It is a montage of shots from Carey's 1998 Butterfly Tour as she travels to locations such as Hawaii, Japan, and Australia.
