White Ninja Comics is a webcomic by Scott Bevan and Kent Earle. It was started by a group of eight in seventh grade. The website was launched in October 2002, and new comics are posted every Monday, Wednesday and Friday (prior to July 3, 2006, it was updated every Tuesday and Saturday). The comic has received over 1900 pieces of fan art.
The comic follows the character White Ninja in a series of compromising positions or strange situations. The supporting characters are odd and sometimes inconsistent; the entire strip has a surrealist feel to it. The majority of the humour is derived from the bizarre absurdity of each situation that White Ninja finds himself in.
The White Ninja
White Ninja Comics usually consists of thin line drawings in black and white, and humour utilizing violence and nonsensical gags verging on non sequitur. The art style is simplistic and crude, with some objects needing labels to establish what they're supposed to be. With these simple drawings, the humor is well expressed. White Ninja's disturbing actions are allegedly meant to represent the hidden side of mankind, though this is probably a bit of satirical embellishment on the part of the authors.
The authors have gained a fair share of appreciation for their work, and are members of the popular Dayfree Press comic group.
The simplistic art which composes White Ninja Comics has provoked much debate in the webcomic community. The humour style of this comic attracts a dedicated following, though many first-time readers of this strip may be put off by its quirky brand of humour.
According to the comic's authors, White Ninja was conceived in a grade seven classroom at Montgomery Elementary, where Scott Bevan doodled out an admittedly very "un-funny" comic called "The White Ninja." Yet, at the time, being preteens, the comic was enjoyed. There are now over 400 White Ninja strips to date.
The Nature of White Ninja
Although White Ninja's origin is explained in episode #29 ["The Origin of White Ninja"], White Ninja's history and personality change from comic to comic with no intended continuity.
White Ninja can either be the hero or the villain of any given comic. Sometimes he is needlessly cruel, and sometimes he is helpful (though the cruel side seems to come out more often). He has no definite traits and is only defined by his ultra-simplified appearance, which sometimes changes as well. This discontinuity is also apparent by the fact that White Ninja changes between having a wife and/or children, a girlfriend, or just being single (he is even seen as deceased in episode #377 ["The Death of White Ninja"], but, in true White Ninja form, returns alive in the next comic). The humour comes from the absurdity of White Ninja's situations, which is compounded by his mercurial characteristics.
Merchandise
WhiteNinjaComics.com also offers a slew of merchandise including t-shirts including White Ninja's pickle sidekick, a grenade with the caption "Pinecones Aren't Toys", White Ninja riding a bucking kiwi and White Ninja poking a dead fish among other things. The site also offers five books full of White Ninja comics, buttons, underwear and a baseball cap.
