White power
Encyclopedia : W : WH : WHI : White power
White Power is a political slogan which describes the views of those ascribing to varying degrees of white nationalism to keep the self-determination of white people. White Power as a political phrase was coined by American Nazi Party leader George Lincoln Rockwell in a debate with Black Panther Stokley Carmichael, who issued a call for Black Power. White Power became the name of the party's newspaper and the title of a book by Rockwell. Today, many racist ideological factions, such as White supremacists, White separatists, White nationalists, White Christians and Neo-Nazis, use the term White Power. This article specifically deals with a racist usage of "white power" and does not preclude that the phrase can certainly be used with a non-racist meaning as well.
Skinheads
White Power as an ideology is associated with a racist faction of the skinhead subculture that developed in the United Kingdom in the late 1970s. It emerged in a time when the UK was experiencing the second wave of Punk rock. The left wing created an image of punks as leftist, and the revival of the skinhead style was taken advantage of by the far right, even though the original skinhead subculture of the 1960s had ties to the Jamaican rude boys, in terms of music and style. Most skinheads today do not believe in white power.
Media sensationalism encouraged the popular conception of the whole skinhead subculture as being synonymous with white power ideology. One source of this misconception is the words and actions of the singer Ian Stuart, who was a member of the punk band Skrewdriver. Skrewdriver's 1983 LP White Power was the first White Power LP, printed by the White Noise record label.
Contemporary issues
The white power scene continued to grow through the 1990s, and may be still expanding. This is partly due to large sums of money being used to promote the music, style, and culture to youth. This business has changed strategies and targets several times. While the growth of the movement hasn't translated into influence, it has spun off variations of bizarre and often contradictory character. Nazism in the skinhead vein has been observed in nations such as Japan and Thailand in very small groups. One of the latest documented white power skinhead phenomena discovered was the underground subculture in Israel in 2005. See Israeli skinheads.
