The term white pride is used primarily in the United States to denote a celebration of the heritage of persons of "White-European" or "Caucasian" extraction, though generally to the exclusion of homosexuals and Jews, as well as some other groups. The term is highly controversial, as many believe it implies racism, having been coined and used as a slogan by a number of white supremacist organizations. But other proponents of White Pride argue that the term is not inherently racist, that it is roughly analogous to black pride or gay pride, and that there is a cultural double standard in which only certain ethnicities are permitted to openly have pride in their heritage. However, opponents of White Pride argue that movements like black pride represent affirmations of self-worth and solidarity on the part of oppressed minorities — and, to them, White Pride is an attempt to reinforce the very hierarchies that gave rise to that oppression. Several anti-racist organizations have argued that ideas like "white pride" and "white nationalism" exist merely to provide a sanitized public face for white supremacism.

Usage

The phrase "white pride" has been used on promotional materials by white supremacist organizations for some time. Notably, the slogan "White Pride, World Wide" appears in the logo for Stormfront - an organization known for its white supremacist and/or white nationalist leanings. It is owned and operated by Don Black, who was formerly a Grand Wizard (national leader) of the Ku Klux Klan. White pride has also been associated with David Lane's "14 words", a shibboleth used as a greeting by White Nationalists and white supremacists. The 14 words are: "We must secure the existence of our people and a future for White children." The phrase was taken from Lane's work, "The White Genocide Manifesto."

The term also appears often in the lyrics of many white supremacist bands, notably in Skrewdriver's version of Elvis Presley's "In the Ghetto," in which the lyrics have been altered considerably from Presley's original.
