Wichita class cruiser

Encyclopedia : W : WI : WIC : Wichita class cruiser

The Wichita class cruisers was actually a class of only heavy cruiser built for the United States Navy and design-wise was the connection between the pre-war cruisers, and those build during the war.

She had been concepted as another Brooklyn class light cruiser, and design wise, she was very similar to them, but with new model 8-inch (203mm) turret. Built with 5 inch (127mm) L/38 dual-purpose guns, in single enclosed mounts, and only four of eight of the 5-inch guns had them. The Wichita's airplane hangers and catapults were mounted aft, as all later cruiser classes would.

Only example:

USS Wichita (CA-45) (laid down 1935, launched 1937, commissioned 1939, decommissioned 1947)
