WikiMapia is a project aimed at "describing the whole planet earth". It is an internet resource combining Google Maps and a "wiki" system. The project was created by Alexandre Koriakine and Evgeniy Saveliev on May 24, 2006, and is unrelated to Wikimedia.
Users browse the information through the Google Maps interface. Rectanglular hotspots are overlaid on the maps, and these can be clicked on to provide information about map features contained within the hotspot. Users of WikiMapia can add such hotspots dynamically which correspond to multi-lingual wiki entries. Hotspots can also be reported for deletion.
Google Maps has three types of map viewing: map, satellite and hybrid. WikiMapia introduces an 'auto' view, which is a mix of hybrid view for big areas and satellite view for smaller areas.
Among 36 languages supported are all six official languages of the UN.
