Will Parry

Encyclopedia : W : WI : WIL : Will Parry

Will Parry is the protagonist in Philip Pullman's novel The Subtle Knife, and one of the protagonists (along with Lyra Belacqua) of The Amber Spyglass. These books, together with Northern Lights (The Golden Compass in the USA), complete the trilogy called His Dark Materials.

Will Parry is son of an explorer and a woman who suffers from apparent mental problems including some kind of obsessive-compulsive disorder and paranoia. Will doesn't remember his father, John Parry, a former Royal Marine, who has not been heard of since he vanished on an expedition to the Arctic, and who we later learn has wandered into another world and is unable to find his way back.

Will has to take care of his mother until one day some strange agents come to his house. He eventually decides that he must leave her with his former piano teacher, Mrs. Cooper, and flees himself - accidentally killing one of the agents as he makes his escape. He accidentally finds a strange portal to the city of Cittàgazze in another world, in which he meets Lyra Belacqua, a girl procedent from yet another world, a girl who he will end up falling in love with. Will plays a pivotal role in the war that Lord Asriel and the angels wage against The Authority.

After being separated from Will during the journey to the world of the dead, his soul becomes visible as a dæmon. Upon reuniting with Will, she is named Kirjava by Serafina Pekkala. Kirjava's name is Finnish for "multi-colored". At the end of the trilogy, Kirjava settles in the shape of a large colorful cat.

Will has been described as having straight black eyebrows, black hair, a strong, jutting jaw, and can often have a passionate ferocity in his eyes, which the witch Serafina Pekkala says she had not dared to look into.
