William Gilbert (Rugby)

William Gilbert (1799–1877) was a cobbler in Rugby, Warwickshire, England. He supplied boots to Rugby School. When the game of rugby football was developed, he began to produce the distinctive egg-shaped balls used in the game. Gilbert, the rugby supply company he started, continues to this day.
