Winbond Electronics Corporation is a Taiwan-based corporation which was founded in 1987 and is a producer of semiconductors and several types of integrated circuits, most notably Dynamic RAM, Static RAM, microcontrollers, and personal computer ICs. Winbond is currently the largest brand name integrated circuit supplier in Taiwan, and one of the biggest suppliers of semiconductor solutions worldwide. In 1990, Winbond established Winbond Electronics Corporation America to fabricate and supply products to the American market. In 1997, Winbond has embarked upon a strategy of expanding its core engineering expertise by acquiring key technologies through acquisitions. In 1998, Winbond acquired Silicon Valley-based Information Storage Devices, a market leader and global provider of voice solutions in silicon and provider of the industry's award winning line of ChipCorder® voice record and playback IC solutions. In 1999, Winbond expanded its technology reach again by acquiring Bright Micro Electronics (BMI) and the Thin Film Transistor (TFT) LCD division of Cirrus Logic®, based in Austin, Texas. Since that time, all of these companies have become fully integrated into the Winbond family enabling Winbond to offer expanded lines of award-winning voice and speech chip solutions and state-of-the-art TFT LCD-driver ICs. In little more than a year, Winbond America has rolled out three new product lines: the WTS70X series, the industry's first single chip IC solution that converts Text-To-Speech (TTS); the W68xx series, a family of voice CODEC chips aimed at telephony, communications and consumer applications; and the WMS72xx series, a family of 256-tap, non-volatile, digitally programmable potentiometer ICs aimed at communications, industrial and consumer applications. In 2005 Winbond acquired the Advanced PC product line from National Semiconductor, and has become a major provider of IC products for such companies as Samsung, Lenovo, Dell, and Intel. There is an average of 2 Winbond Chips in every computer in the world.
